Questions for a useful conversation

Take these questions to a careers adviser, teacher, family member or apprenticeship employer.

• Can I explain a situation, action and outcome?

• What do I want to know about the learning culture?

• How can I explain a gap honestly and briefly?

Prepare in three tracks

Prepare in three tracks. First the role: tasks, requirements and two open questions. Then the employer: what it delivers, for whom and where you would work. Finally yourself: one example each of learning, collaboration, a mistake and responsibility. This lets you respond flexibly without memorising a script.

For an unfamiliar question, pause, clarify or state an assumption. Strong answers do not require constant certainty; they show a traceable thought process. In technical exercises, how you structure information and notice risk may matter as much as the final answer.

Use STAR without sounding scripted

Situation and task need only enough context. Spend most of the answer on your action: what did you decide, say, check or change? The result can include what did not work and what you would do differently next time.

• Prepare four examples as prompts, not memorised speeches.

• Check travel, technology, clothing and documents the day before.

• Practise aloud with a person or recording.

• Prioritise three questions and avoid asking for obvious public facts.

• Afterwards, record the questions and your answers for next time.
