From hackathon to responsible product
How the Build Week prototype became a tested app and a platform designed for lasting operation.
What this is really about
The first idea became a working TestFlight app with official opportunities, map discovery, GPT-5.6 support, favourites and application tracking. The next stage adds editorial content, pilots and durable quality processes.
Your next steps
Work through these steps at your own pace. Good career decisions come from concrete comparisons, not from finding one perfect answer.
• Inventory claims and data sources.
• Test separately with schools, young people and parents.
• Define error and complaint routes before release.
• Review pilot findings before scaling.
Questions for a useful conversation
Take these questions to a careers adviser, teacher, family member or apprenticeship employer.
• What was only an assumption in the prototype?
• Who is accountable when something goes wrong?
• Which feature should deliberately wait?
What had to change after the prototype
A hackathon optimises for learning speed and a clear demonstration. A public service must handle incomplete data, outages, corrections, abuse, accessibility and different safeguarding needs. We therefore separate the mobile app, marketing platform and CMS, keep form data server-side and require source and review fields before publishing content.
Product maturity now shows in the chain behind each feature: live vacancies arrive through server-side adapters from official sources, personal favourites and applications are protected by authentication and row-level security, and AI responses are checked against structured schemas and the specific advert.
Our release gate
A feature can be technically complete without being ready to publish. Release requires an accountable owner, evidenced content, privacy and safeguarding review, accessible use, an error route, monitoring and a way to withdraw it.
• Which user decision can the feature influence?
• Which source, assumption and uncertainty does it contain?
• What happens after error, misuse or outage?
• Can the core task be completed by keyboard and assistive technology?
• Who decides correction, withdrawal and re-release?
