Beyond making: understand the whole cycle
Technical work often starts with a drawing, job instruction or fault report. It then moves through material and tool selection, safe setup, manufacture or installation, measurement, documentation and handover. Maintenance adds diagnosis: narrow the symptoms, isolate energy, confirm the cause and only then repair. Precision is visible in preparation and test evidence as much as in the finished component.
Compare roles by planned production versus unpredictable fault-finding, workshop versus field work, and manual processes versus automated systems. These differences shape daily life more than the broad label “engineering”.
