Four very different kinds of work
Software development turns requirements into code, tests and maintainable change. Infrastructure connects devices, networks, identities and security. Data roles check quality, structure information and explain results. Support reconstructs problems, communicates clearly and documents solutions. These areas may blend in a small team and separate more clearly in a large organisation.
The shared foundation is not simply being “good with computers” but learning systematically: reproduce a problem, test assumptions, document changes and ask for help at the right time. Ask how much of a role is new work, maintenance, support, meetings and independent learning.
A portfolio that proves something
A finished screenshot proves less than a traceable process. A small project is enough if you can explain the problem, decisions, mistakes, tests and next improvement. Remove real credentials and personal data.
• Define one user problem in two sentences.
• Document assumptions and deliberately omitted features.
• Show at least one fault, its diagnosis and resolution.
• Explain setup or use so somebody else can repeat it.
• Be ready to say what you would build differently now.
