Questions for a useful conversation
Take these questions to a careers adviser, teacher, family member or apprenticeship employer.
• Which task genuinely interests me?
• What have I learnt about the employer?
• Which action demonstrates my motivation?
Requirement, evidence, connection
A covering letter is stronger when every paragraph has a job. Name the vacancy and a credible reason for the field. Connect two important requirements with evidence from education, a placement, work or your own project. Finally, explain why this employer’s learning environment is relevant and what you would like to explore at interview.
Generic praise is interchangeable. Use only research that creates a real link: a product, customer group, training rotation, location or named project. Do not copy language you could not explain naturally in conversation.
Build one evidence paragraph
“Your advert asks for careful record-keeping. In a science project I recorded four sets of results using one shared structure, flagged anomalies and prepared the group’s analysis. I want to develop that accuracy further in your quality team.” This links a strength to evidence and a learning goal.
• The vacancy title and employer are correct.
• The opening could not be sent unchanged to ten employers.
• Two requirements each have verifiable evidence.
• No sentence merely repeats the CV.
• Length, tone and file format suit the application route.
